TITANIUM: NOT JUST METAL—A HIGH-TECH MARVEL
Think all titanium is the same? Think again. This futuristic metal comes in different grades, each tailored for a specific purpose. Some are ultra-strong, others more flexible. Some resist corrosion like nothing else, and one is even designed specifically for piercings.
In total, there are about ten standard grades, divided into two groups. Grades 1 through 4 are commercially pure titanium, while the rest are titanium alloys—enhanced with extra elements for even more power.
At Theia the Jeweler, we work with three carefully selected grades. Whichever one your jewelry is made from, we guarantee it’s always safe, stylish, and built to last.
GRADE 1: PURE, SIMPLE, STRONG
Titanium, nothing more, nothing less.
Grade 1 is the softest form of commercially pure titanium, making it the easiest to shape. It also has the best corrosion resistance in this group, though it’s the least strong. But don’t let that fool you—it’s still way stronger than aluminum while staying lighter. That’s why you’ll find Grade 1 titanium in saltwater applications, aerospace engineering, and even Verstappen’s F1 car.
So why are Theia’s Chains made from Grade 1? Because it welds like a dream. When it comes to crafting a chain, welding the tiny links together is crucial, and this grade delivers the best results.
One catch? Grade 1 titanium doesn’t color as easily as other grades, so Theia’s Chains are only available in Silver and Old Silver. Still sleek. Still timeless.
GRADE 5: THE QUEEN OF TITANIUM
Ti-6Al-4V: 90% Titanium, 6% Aluminum, 4% Vanadium
Meet the most popular titanium alloy in the world—used in over 50% of all titanium applications. Need lightweight yet durable components for aircraft and spacecraft? Grade 5. Something that can survive in salt water for years? Grade 5. Or maybe a part that can withstand temperatures up to 430ºC? You guessed it—Grade 5.
This powerhouse alloy takes already-strong titanium and makes it even stronger. It boasts the highest strength-to-weight ratio of all titanium grades. Plus, unlike purer forms, it can be heat-treated to become even tougher.
But the real magic? It bonds with the human body. A Grade 5 titanium implant actually fuses with bone over time, making it the go-to material for medical implants—from dental work to surgical plates. That’s why it’s also called Medical Grade Titanium.
At Theia, we highlight not just the functional strength of Grade 5 but also its aesthetic potential. If you want bold, durable, hypoallergenic, and colorful jewelry, Grade 5 titanium is your perfect match.
ASTM F136: THE PIERCING STANDARD
The only titanium better than Grade 5? ASTM F136.
Think of it as Grade 5’s elite upgrade. The impurities are reduced to an absolute minimum, making it 100% safe for open wounds and long-term wear inside the body.
ASTM stands for American Society for Testing and Materials International—a global standard-setting organization. The “F” specification is specifically for surgical implants.
While Grade 5 is biocompatible, ASTM F136 is the industry standard for piercings. That means no irritation, no infections, and no worries—no matter how long you wear it.
When you choose ASTM F136 titanium for your piercings, you’re not just picking jewelry. You’re choosing the absolute best.
